This book is so charming! This is the third book I’ve purchased from Chris Van Dusen and this is my favorite! I am a Speech-Language Pathologist in the school setting and this book (as well as his others) are great because they have enriching vocabulary and figurative language, but this one is my favorite because of the storyline. Also, the illustrations are beautiful! I brought in a tent and made a campfire and my student loved it! My 6 and 3 year old boys also loved reading in a tent in my living room!
- Chris Van Dusen has written another very good childs book, “A Camping Spree With Mr. Magee” is a very entertaining story with very imagination provoking illustrations about the misadventures of Mr. Magee and Dee as they perch themselves on a cliff area over a rushing river.
As you may notice is Magees yellow car that is drawn in some of his other books and his dog is exactly the opposite variety of colors then Jacks from “If I Built A Car”.
The quality of this book is exceptional and age 6 or 7 would be about the correct age for a young reader to read this, but younger children will enjoy being read this book to.
His books are wonderfully illustrated. Very creative and refreshing and fun. I got several of his books thinking they would also be great for a 2 year old because there isn’t much text on each page and the pictures are great. But halfway through the stories all have a dangerous event that Mr. Magee and his dog have to get out of (Stuck at the edge of a waterfall ready to fall down, stuck at the top of a tree with no way to get down), so it would probably be a little too scary for a tiny kid even though the author comes up with a creative rescue. The description says it is for ages 4-7, which sounds about right.
This is a great book for kids. It’s funny. It’s fun with great illustrations and lovable characters. Chris van Dusen is great at writing and rhyming words that make sense. His pictures are really good- detailed and cartoonish. Even kids who can’t read quite yet can probably tell what is going on. In Chris van Dusen’s Mr. Magee collection, each book has an animal that gets them into trouble and then gets them out of it some way. The pictures have lots of background and lots of feeling and mood. Mr. van Dusen, it pleasures me to give you this honorable golden medal award for your book A Camping Spree with Mr. Magee. Really great book!
It was “camping” theme day in the first grade class where I volunteer. B&N had literally no good books I could buy to read for the children. A Camping Spree with Mr. Magee was incredibly fresh, fun and exciting to read to the kids. They loved all of it and was a “perfect” read in prose. We read it in the classroom with the lights turned down, the kids on their sleeping bags and flashlights aimed at the fabulous pictures. Would highly recommend this book for youngsters ages about four through ten.
Love Chris Van Dusen’s books! If you haven’t read them with your child, you are missing something. A Camping Spree with Mr. Magee is one of three adventures of Mr. Magee and his dog Dee. Their camping spree goes awry when a bear accidentally unhitches their trailer which ends up in the river headed for a waterfall. The whole story is told in wonderfully rhyming verse which adds to the fun. Check out all of Van Dusen’s books on his Amazon page:Chris Van Dusen
My classroom is camping themed, and I place related books on display in the beginning of the year. This book was a real hit with my second graders! They loved the storyline and illustrations. It was a fantastic read aloud that lent itself easily to a lesson. It is also on TumbleBooks, and many of my kiddos listened to it over and over again after hearing me read it aloud! Fantastic addition to a classroom or personal child’s library!
Cute little camping story about Mr. Magee and his dog. While it’s a good book I wouldn’t recommend paying much for it, it’s just as good as a “check it out from library” instead of an “add to home library” if you have that option. If you don’t, it would make a good book to occasionally read but I don’t see it becoming one of my kids favorites anytime soon.
Bought this for my grand daughter who just turned 5 today because I have seen two of the other Mr Magee books and enjoyed them. I live 1500 miles away, so I thought I would read it with her on FaceTime. Instead, after reading it with her mother last night, she told me the whole story, every detail, with excitement and the cutest expressions! I felt like she lived the book, went on the adventure with them. Certainly a hit that will be read many times by my grand children. It’s on my list to buy as gifts also.
